Moving to Los Angeles or Las Vegas: Utility Setup Checklist

Confirm the right provider for the exact address, coordinate service dates and keep a clear handoff record before moving day in Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Los Angeles + Las Vegas / Moving

Utilities are easy to leave until the last week of a move. That can create avoidable confusion about who serves the address, which services are included and when an account should start. A simple service sheet helps you handle those questions before the moving truck arrives.

Los Angeles and Las Vegas are broad markets, not single utility territories. Confirm the provider for the exact property address. A nearby home, a mailing city or a familiar company name is not enough to establish which service applies.

Build an address-specific service sheet

Create a separate row for electricity, water, gas if applicable, sewer, trash and internet. Record the verified provider, official contact page, account holder, requested service date and confirmation number. Add a column for anything the landlord or association includes.

For a condominium or rental, ask in writing which services are individually metered and which are billed through another party. For a home purchase, ask which existing services need a new customer application. Do not assume the previous occupant’s account transfers automatically with ownership.

Keep the sheet practical. Sensitive identification, full account numbers and payment details belong in your own secure records and the provider’s official system, rather than in a shared moving checklist or a real-estate inquiry form.

Coordinate dates around the actual handoff

Use the possession or move-in arrangement in your agreement to discuss service timing. Closing, key delivery and physical move-in can occur at different times. Ask your agent or property manager to help clarify the handoff rather than guessing from an anticipated closing date.

Verify when the outgoing account ends and when yours begins, without requesting another customer’s private account information. Ask the provider about current processing times, required access, possible appointments and any charges or deposits. Save the confirmation; submitting a request is not the same as confirming that service is active.

Los Angeles: check whether LADWP serves the property

For an address within its service area, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power provides official start, stop and transfer options. Its service-request page distinguishes moving an existing customer’s service from applying as a different customer. Follow the path that fits your situation.

If an address or occupancy date changes after submission, use the provider’s instructions for changing or cancelling the request. Avoid creating duplicate requests to solve a problem that needs a correction. If LADWP does not serve the property, identify the correct provider before entering personal or payment information.

Las Vegas: verify the water-service territory

The Las Vegas Valley Water District offers start, stop and transfer tools for addresses it serves, including options through My Account. Its guidance notes that response timing can vary with request volume and that activation charges or a deposit may apply. Check the current details directly rather than relying on a number from an old moving guide.

The district also advises checking fixtures and piping before water is turned on. Arrange access and make sure faucets and other outlets are not left running. If the property is vacant or its condition is uncertain, coordinate a readiness check with the appropriate person before activation.

Confirm more than the application

  • Verify the service address, unit number and requested date on each confirmation.
  • Ask whether access or an appointment is still required.
  • Check how to report a failed start or a changed move date.
  • Schedule internet separately if installation or equipment delivery is needed.
  • Once you can access the home, confirm that the intended services work and report problems through official channels.

Keep the final service sheet with your move records. It is useful both on the first day and when reviewing the first bills. If something is unclear, resolve the provider or billing question directly rather than paying an unfamiliar request simply because it arrived during your move.
